Mindfulness Week- Day 1

So I was thinking to myself that I usually have a focus for the week; a breakup to deal with, issues with money, issues with my kids… Not this time. This week I’m focusing on nothing. I dont want to go into this Mindfulness Week 2011 with the expectation of an outcome. That is setting myself up for failure.

This Mindfulness Week, i vow to devote at least one hour to meditation, including Anapana, and to simplify my midday meals. For breakfast, I will eat granola or oatmeal, and for evenings I will have a bowl of miso soup and tea, if desired.

So I have simplified my midday meals (the largest meal of the day) to include:

  • a grain (rice, quinoa, or barley)
  • a protein (tofu, lentils, or Mung beans)
  • some greens (collards or kale)
  • and veggies (any two: carrots, yellow squash, zucchini)
  • mustard seeds or cumin for seasoning…

In keeping with Mindfulness, I also will adhere to the following, adapted from Vipassana:

The Precepts

  1. to abstain from killing any being;
  2. to abstain from stealing;
  3. to abstain from all sexual activity;
  4. to abstain from telling lies;
  5. to abstain from all intoxicants
  6. to abstain from eating after midday; (miso soup is adapted. I work so I need it)
  7. to abstain from sensual entertainment and bodily decorations
  8. to abstain from using high or luxurious beds.

The Eightfold Path

  1. Right View
  2. Right Intention
  3. Right Speech
  4. Right Action
  5. Right Livelihood
  6. Right Effort
  7. Right Mindfulness
  8. Right Concentration

And let’s not forget The Three Jewels:

The Buddha, you know him…

The Dhamma, the truth…

The Sangha, my beloved Tangerine…

Seven days…

May all beings be happy!
